Swedish skating has lacked a poster name since Olympic gold medalist Tomas Gustafson was at his best in the late 1980s.

But with Nils van der Poel's big breakthrough in Heerenveen, the association breathes morning air again.

And high on the agenda is the dream of an all-round WC at Nya Ullevi in Gothenburg.

- The international federation would like Sweden to arrange a championship, says Mattias Hadders.

Got Event is the municipal company responsible for the management and operation of Gothenburg's event arenas.

- It would have been fantastic with a skating WC in Gothenburg.

They are most welcome and we will make sure to find a date, says Lotta Nibell, CEO of Got Event about the opportunity.

But Got Event has not yet received an official request.

- But it might make a difference now that we have a champion at home, she says.

The big question

The big sticking point is the economy.

The Swedish Skating Association is a small association and does not have the financial muscle for such a large event.

But with van der Poel's success, they hope and believe that it will be possible to find sponsors.

- From a purely financial point of view, I think Nils strengthened his brand and he could earn a lot of money on this.

If you could get some financial support that way, then I think we are guaranteed to have a big competition, says Hadders.

The only all-weather course

The last time Sweden arranged an all-round WC was in 2003, when the competitions were decided at Ruddalen in Gothenburg.

Sweden's only all-weather course is under cover there.

Recently, the Gothenburg Sports and Association Board decided that the track will be upgraded for 50 million.

But it is still not relevant for a World Cup.

Among other things, because the track has load-bearing posts inside the isoval.

- It is no longer allowed for a World Cup organizer, states Roger Bodin, chairman of the West Swedish Skating Association.

The practical solution would instead be to rent a mobile facility for an artificially frozen 400-meter track to Nya Ullevi.

- It was used with great success at the World Cup at Amsterdam Olympic Stadium 2018. We could rent that facility, says Mattias Hadders.
