Real Madrid have one leg in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Spaniards won their round of 16 first leg at Atalanta Bergamo 1-0 (0-0) and are now in a very good starting position for the second leg.

For the Italian coach, it was mainly the German referee to blame.

In fact, Tobias Stieler made a groundbreaking decision early on in the game when he showed Bergamo's Remo Freuler the red card in the 17th minute.

This had previously taken Real's left-back Ferland Mendy off his feet shortly before the penalty area, which Stieler saw as an emergency brake.

A tough decision, at least, but not entirely out of thin air.

For Gian Piero Gasperini it is.

"Maybe we would have lost anyway, but the referee ruined the game," said the angry coach after the game: "If I said what I think, Uefa would ban me for two months."

"Can't distinguish foul from duel"

But that didn't stop him from sharing some of his thoughts.

Uefa could not appoint a referee "who cannot distinguish a foul from a duel": "If they cannot do that, then they should look for another job."

In general, there should be "no referees who have not played themselves," added Gasperini.

Because even the video evidence would not help: "You have all the means of television, but not even when you see the pictures, you get it."

Tobias Stieler is one of the most renowned German referees.

The 39-year-old has been whistling in the Bundesliga since 2012, has already headed the DFB Cup final and has been in the European Cup and international matches since 2014.
