The hoped-for return to the golf course was done for a long time for Tiger Woods - for the superstar, after a terrible car accident, it's all about being able to walk again.

The 45-year-old American drove off the road in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning (local time), rolled over several times and suffered complicated fractures in his leg.

According to the authorities, the father of two children was lucky and could have died.

"If I've learned anything over the years, it's never to write off Tiger," tweeted ex-US President Barack Obama.

"Open debris fractures that affected the upper and lower parts of the tibia and fibula were stabilized by a rod in the tibia," reported the doctor Anish Mahajan in a statement made by Woods management that evening.

Further bone injuries in the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins.

During the long operation on the right leg, pressure was also taken off the muscle.

The 15-time major winner was "awake, approachable and is now recovering in his room," it said.

There will be no further information for the time being.

Whether Woods was injured only on his right leg in the accident or, as the authorities previously stated, but on both legs, was not clear from the statement.

No signs of alcohol, drugs, or medication at Woods

Police and firefighters reported at a press conference that Woods had shown no evidence of alcohol, drug or medication in the incident on a steeply sloping road where accidents are more common.

The section in the posh area is known for excessive speeds.

45 miles per hour (about 72 km / h) are allowed there.

Police officer Carlos Gonzalez reported that he had seen cars there at 80 miles per hour (almost 130 km / h).

The weather did not play a role, in the accident after 7 a.m. there was already daylight.

"It will take days or weeks to find out everything," said the sheriff in charge, Alex Villanueva.

Woods was traveling at “a comparatively higher speed than normal” and was very lucky.

“Everything was broken in the front and back, but the interior was largely undamaged.

That was the upholstery, otherwise it would have been fatal, ”said Villanueva about the wrecked car.

TV recordings and photos showed how the heavy car was a good distance from the road on the driver's side.

There were no skid marks, reported Villanueva.

Woods was released through the windshield.

The sponsor's off-road vehicle, whose PGA tournament in Los Angeles Woods hosted this weekend, broke through a tree about 20 centimeters thick and was thrown across the two oncoming lanes.

The vehicle barely missed a telephone pole.

When policeman Gonzalez arrived minutes after a local resident called, Woods was reportedly conscious and able to speak.

No other vehicles were involved.

It was only after the accident that there was a minor collision of other cars.

Like many other athletes and celebrities, record golfer Jack Nicklaus expressed "deeply concerned".

"We want to offer him our support and prayers from the bottom of our hearts in this difficult time," tweeted the 81-year-old, who has three more major wins than Woods.

“It hurts when one of your closest friends is involved in an accident.

I just hope he's fine.

I'm worried about his children, I'm sure they're struggling right now, ”said Justin Thomas, number three in the golf world rankings.

Wood's ex-girlfriend Lindsey Vonn, basketball player Steph Curry and ex-President Donald Trump were among the people who sent public wishes for wellbeing.

Woods had hosted a PGA tournament in Los Angeles at the weekend and presented the trophy to the winner Max Homa.

He himself could not participate after his fifth operation on his back in December and wanted to play again at the Masters in Augusta in April.

"God, I hope so," he replied to a related question.

Nothing will come of it now.

US media are already speculating whether the accident is synonymous with the end of your career.
