Woods traveled alone in the car and for unknown reasons drove into the center railing before the car overturned, crashed into a tree to finally end up completely stranded on the side of the road, early on Tuesday morning local time (Swedish Tuesday evening).

Accident-affected stretch

According to police, it did not appear that he was affected by anything, reports the LA Times.

However, he is said to have driven faster than what is normally done on the current stretch.

Police officer Carlos Gonzalez, who was first on the scene, says that Woods had been awake and talkable but could not stand up himself.

He also noted that the golfer had been wearing a seatbelt.

- Mr Woods is lucky to have survived this, because it is a very unlucky stretch of road.

We have seen a large number of accidents on this part of the road, says Gonzalez.

Not the first accident

Woods received no life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to hospital where he is operated on for several injuries to his legs, says his agent Mark Steinberg according to ESPN.

This is not the first time Woods has been involved in a car accident.

In November 2009, several infidelity deals were discovered after Woods crashed his car near his and his then wife Elin Nordengren's home.

The accident and the scandal that followed kept him away from the gulf for several months.

As recently as December last year, Woods underwent back surgery - his fifth in a row - to try to get rid of the back pain that has plagued the 15-time major winner for several years.
