Real Madrid did good business on Wednesday in the first match against Atalanta in the eighth finals of the Champions League.

Despite a battered selection, 'De Koninklijke' won thanks to a nice swipe by Ferland Mendy 0-1 against the Serie A club, which played with ten men for a long time.

Atalanta was already on the field after seventeen minutes with a man less due to a red card for Remo Freuler.

According to German referee Tobias Stieler, the midfielder prevented the sprinting Mendy from free passage and sent the Swiss off the field despite fierce protests from Atalanta.

Despite the numerical underlay, the Serie A club remained on its feet for a long time against the poor Real Madrid, which missed nine players in the selection due to an injury wave, including club top scorer Karim Benzema, captain Sergio Ramos and forward Eden Hazard.

Mendy's winning goal was only four minutes before the end.

He curled the ball in nicely.

Marten de Roon completed the ninety minutes at Atalanta.

Sam Lammers stayed on the bench throughout the game and Hans Hateboer was missing from the match selection due to an injury that has kept him sidelined since the end of January.

It is uncertain whether he recovered in time for the return.

The return between Real Madrid and Atalanta will be played on March 16 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

In the Spanish capital, the first whistle will sound at 9 p.m.

Real Madrid was eliminated by Manchester City last season in the eighth finals of the million ball.

Real Madrid powerless against ten Atalanta

Despite the early red card for Freuler, the lack of Benzema, Ramos and Hazard made itself felt at the battered Real Madrid.

The team of trainer Zidane could barely make a fist against the Italian ten.

Defender Nacho was the closest to scoring after a solo, but he shot into the side net.

After the break, the reigning national champion of Spain was a bit more threatening.

A deflected shot by Luka Modric went just wide and Vinícius Júnior fired over a few meters from the goal.

After several attempts, it was finally hit for Real in the 86th minute.

Mendy got the ball from a variant of a corner kick at about 25 meters from the goal and curled it beautifully in the far corner, out of reach of Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

It ended there in Bergamo.

Atalanta reached the quarter finals of the Champions League with his debut last season.

The team of trainer Gian Piero Gasperini was eliminated in the last eight by Paris Saint-Germain, which later lost the final to Bayern Munich.
