An announcing angel fluttered through the Gallur Pavilion.

And the renowned Madrid track worked the miracle by providing another

world record

in a speed test.

Grant Holloway

, a 23-year-old Virginian student from Florida, 1.88 tall and 82 kilos, ran the

60-meter hurdles in 7.29

.

One hundredth less than

Colin Jackson on March 6, 1994

.

Holloway, the reigning

110 hurdles world champion at Doha2019

, came in as the author of three of the six best records ever.

He was down seven times from 7.38 (one more than Jackson).

This winter he came from signing five races under 7.40, including

Lievin's

, where with 7.32, the second best all-time mark, he was on Jackson's heels.

In the semifinal, Holloway, always flashing at the start and brutal, between power and essence, in the race and the passage of obstacles, returned to perform 7.32.

In the final he repeated, in principle, tenacious, the brand.

But, revised, it shrunk to 7.29.

A

three-hundredth readjustment

is not very common, and Holloway was torn between hope and skepticism for a moment.

Hope triumphed.

Holloway presents his candidacy for the record of 110 hurdles held by his compatriot

Aries Merritt

since 2012 with 12.80.

Colin Jackson, a Welshman who turned 54 on the 18th, has been one of the best hurdlers in history.

His primacy on the indoor track was the tribute that faithful athletics continued to pay him.

Now those numbers are already a memory and not a presence.

Holloway's record overshadowed the rest of the marks.

But there were very good ones.

Especially in races.

Ethiopian

Gudaf Tsegay

performed 8: 22.65 in the 3,000.

And his compatriot

Habitam Alemu

, 1: 58.94 in the 800s. Among the men, another Ethiopian,

Selemon Barega

, prevailed in the 1,500 with 3: 35.42, with an excellent

Jesús Gómez

in his wake (3: 36.32).

The Spanish midfield also

excelled

with

Mariano García

, first in the 800 with 1: 45.66.

Dominator of the race, he beat none other than

Amel Tuka and Pierre-Ambroise Bosse

, both with 1: 45.95.
