Aleksandar Rankovic will return to Sparta Rotterdam next season.

The Serb, who was fired by ADO Den Haag in November, will once again become trainer Henk Fraser's assistant.

In the 2017/2018 season, Rankovic was already Fraser's assistant at Vitesse.

The two continued to work together in that capacity at Sparta in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons, after which Rankovic became head coach at ADO Den Haag last summer.

His first adventure as head coach was not a success.

ADO decided to fire Rankovic at the beginning of November because of the disappointing results.

Led by the Serbian, the clubs won only two of the first nine official matches.

Next season, 42-year-old Rankovic will be reunited at Sparta with 54-year-old Fraser.

In Rotterdam, he succeeds Gérard de Nooijer, who wants to continue his career elsewhere.

Sparta currently occupies twelfth place in the Eredivisie with 23 points.

Fraser's team is thus ten points above the relegation line.

The team from Rotterdam will continue the competition on Sunday with a home game against Willem II.
