At the end of November 2020, Mikael Gunnulfsen stood for a landslide victory in the classic Beitostölen.

He gained confidence in the World Cup in Ruka, but declined due to illness.

NRK called him one of Norway's World Cup hopes.

But in early January, there was a heavy blow.

During a workout, he crashed badly and broke his leg.

By then, the World Cup was over and he did not look like he would be able to ski any more this winter.

"It is not intended"

But he has already skied again.

It only took six weeks.

- Is it my intention to go skiing ... no, that's not the intention.

You have to be an idiot to do that, Gunnulfsen says to Norwegian VG.

- When I broke my leg, there was talk if I would not ski at all this winter, so most have reacted in the same way as I have done - how is that possible?

But now the leg works so well that it is possible.

"He has had to try"

However, physiotherapist Christian Wiig does not want to go so far as to say that Gunnulfsen is "back on skis" already now.

- He has had to try.

We balance on a knife edge.

We want the rehabilitation to be as short as possible, but it is important not to rush too fast.

My job is to keep him in check, Wiig tells VG.

Gunnulfsen has had some discomfort during his career.

In the autumn of 2019, he pulled both shoulders out of joint during a training session.

In February 2020, he pulled a shoulder out of joint.

Two weeks later, he was forced to cancel a race due to irregular heartbeats.
