American Nina O'Brien came from nowhere, with starting number 19, and drove in second.

Only two hundredths after Mikaela Shiffrin.

Before the competition, she had the best 13th place in the giant slalom in the World Cup.

But when she had to prepare for the second ride, she instead got rid of her skis.

FIS chose to randomly check her equipment.

- On one side of one of my bindings, a screw had gone up a little bit.

So everything was fine except for that bit when the screw came loose, O'Brien tells Ski Racing.

Uncertain about the second ride

The 23-year-old got rid of his skis and boots until all 98 skiers ran the first run.

She had no idea if she would be allowed to complete the second run and did not manage to get any lunch between runs.

- I was not allowed to enter before the inspection for the second ride.

It was a bit stressful, says O'Brien.

The problem with her skis was minimal, but still a problem.

"Felt crazy"

In the back of the binding, the riders stand on plates that should be 50 millimeters.

50.1 is allowed as max.

But the American measured 50.2.

- We gave the service guy a chance to unscrew the screw and it went down immediately and that meant that the plate was lowered.

We measured again and it was 50.1, says Andreas Krönner who is technical manager at FIS.

And O'Brien had to drive the second ride.

She started well and looked to be able to take home a medal, but with only a few gates left, she hacked with the inner ski and came wrong.

She had to settle for a tenth place.

- It was really tough.

It felt crazy from the start but I went for it anyway.

I was very tired, says O'Brien to SVT after the competition.
