It only took two sets for the Japanese Naomi Osaka to beat Williams with the numbers 6-3, 6-4 in Melbourne.

Osaka, who won the Australian Open 2019, is thus approaching its fourth grand slam title.

- It is always an honor to play against her and I did not want to flop.

I really wanted to do my best, Osaka said after the hour-long match.

- As a child, I saw her play and just to meet her is a dream, Osaka says about his opponent.

"Too many simple mistakes"

For 39-year-old Serena Williams, the exit from the tournament means that she misses the chance to touch Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam titles and the American was really disappointed after the match.

- I had so many opportunities.

I just made too many mistakes, too many simple mistakes, she said before leaving the pitch in tears.

Can be the last match

On the way out of the field, she stopped when the audience gave her standing ovations.

She was then asked if this was her farewell to Melbourne Park, where she last won in 2017.

- I do not know.

If I ever say goodbye, I will not tell anyone like that ..., Williams replied.
