  • First news: an electric SUV with up to 500 km of autonomy

  • MEB platform: the first model in the new Volkswagen Group last

It is not news that Skoda 'annoys' the VW brand for its general quality and technology,

practically the same as that of German cars, but at lower prices.

It is the strategy of common platforms and engines that has such

good results in synergies, but that causes a certain embarrassment in terms of marketing

.

In addition, this Enyaq had the "audacity" to be presented worldwide (on September 1, 2020) before the VW ID 4. And it will even arrive first on European and Chinese roads (and with even greater anticipation in relation to the

Audi Q4 eTron and Cupra el-Born

), being one of the

27 100% electric models that

VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda will launch in the coming years.

It is also the

first MEB-based battery-powered model to be manufactured outside of Germany.

It is made in Mladá Boleslav (Czechia), where 32 million were invested to produce it (at an estimated rate of 350 units / day) together with the Octavia and Karoq.

Here you can see a photo gallery with images of the car.

The dimensions are very similar to those of the Kodiaq SUV, the

Czech

top of the range

, being five cm shorter (4.65 m) and four cm lower (1.61 m), while the wheelbase (2.76 m) it's the same.

The design language follows what we have seen in the latest models, such

as the Scala, Octavia, and of course the Karoq and Kodiaq SUVs, with lots of body edges.

The front section is shorter than in combustion models

as there are fewer (and less bulky) components under the hood, which contributes to a spacious cabin and trunk.

The front grille is positioned in a more upright position

having a background of different colors depending on the version, with special emphasis on the Founders Edition launch edition and the vRS in which the hexagonal grill has carved chrome bars with a large number of elements crystalline and contains 130 LEDs that light up.

The same lighting technology is used as standard

in both the headlights and taillights, while the more powerful matrix lighting system,

which avoids dazzling those coming from the front, will be a bonus.

The

MEB platform

makes it possible to create rear-wheel drive cars (and this is the first Skoda of this type since the beginning of the 90s of the last century) or 4x4, in the first case with an electric motor on the rear axle, in the second with a electric motor on each axle (which sends power to the respective wheels).

The battery is built in under the floor, between the axles, while lowering the car's center of gravity.

VARIETY IN THE BATTERY AND POWER SUPPLY

The Enyaq can use three battery sizes (lithium-ion): 55 kWh in the version (which is not planned for Spain)

iV 50

(148 HP, 220 Nm, autonomy of 340 km);

62 kWh in

the iV 60

(179 hp, 310 Nm, 390 km);

and 82 kWh in the

iV 80

(204 hp, 310 Nm, 510 km), all with rear-wheel drive.

Then there are the top-of-the-range versions, which use the latter battery, but with different levels of performance, features and autonomy.

In addition, they have the

second front electric motor and, consequently, 4x4 traction

.

They are the iV 80x reaching 265 hp / 425 Nm and the iV RS raises the bar to 306 hp / 460 Nm, allowing it to achieve sporty performance,

as evidenced by 6.2 seconds in the 0 to 100 km / h (half second less than a Porsche Macan), although the maximum speed is 180 km / h (20 km / h more than in the rest).

These two more powerful Enyaqs have the same range (460 km)

and should match especially well with the coupe air bodywork that will arrive in less than a year.

Suspension is independent on all four wheels

with multiple link links at the rear.

Although you can order a Sportline version with lowered ground clearance and

another with variable electronic damping.

The four discs are ventilated - on wheels that can be between 18 and 21 inches - which is also understood by the

two tons of weight even with the smallest battery.

BY SPACE AND TRUNK, OTHER THAN

If there is a recognized attribute to any Skoda it is a very spacious interior and if we add to that that, technically, 100% electric cars are more spacious, it is not difficult to guess that

the Enyaq treats its occupants well

.

More longitudinally (it exceeds the Kodiaq) than transversely, it allows five people up to 1.85 meters to travel with hardly any restrictions.

The absence of a tunnel in the floor, in the second row, is one of the most appreciated aspects, but the rear seat cannot move forward or backward

and its seatbacks are not reclining but it is a price to pay for the location of the batteries.

The trunk is 585 liters (64 more than a Karoq, 165 less than a Kadoq), it is very regular and reaches 1,710 liters when the rear seatbacks are folded, but the cargo floor is always a little inclined.

There are

hooks to hold bags, tabs to fold down the rear seat backrests, 12V socket, automatic opening and closing of the tailgate and a double compartment bottom where the charging cable can be stored

, because it does not fit under the front hood.

As is Skoda tradition, inside there are many pockets for objects (18 liters depending on the brand) and multiple resources to make life on board

more pleasant: large pockets on the doors, rear air vents, pockets for the smartphone in the backrest of the rear seats, wireless charging tray for two mobiles, curtains on the rear windows, the tables on the backs of the seats, etc.

Up front, the impression is even better, starting with the

high quality of materials, finishes and assembly

, with surfaces and details that improve as the equipment levels go up: Studio, Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite, ecoSuite, RS Suite.

ALWAYS DIGITAL INSTRUMENTATION

In front of the driver there is a small digital instrumentation (5.3 ") that fits well in the minimalist environment with almost no physical buttons, since almost everything is controlled by the

central 13" infotainment screen, the largest installed in a Skoda

, of very high quality and graphic sophistication.

In addition, for 1,660 euros, we will have a head-up display

with information projection with augmented reality, something unusual.

There is connection to Android and Apple devices, Wi-Fi and online browsing, although in the latter cases only as extras.

Charging the battery can be done at home, although on a standard plug it will take about two days).

With a

Wallbox of up to 11 kW, we go down to between six and eight hours

, depending on the size of the battery.

At fast charging stations, all Enyaqs can be powered at 50 kW.

For 500 euros, you can go up to 100 kW or even 125 kW (in the iV 80)

, and then

38 minutes

are enough

to go from 5 to 80% of the load

.

Considering that the cheapest model costs 39,000 euros, this resource should come standard.

SENSATIONS AT THE WHEEL VERSION IV 80

The experience behind the wheel of the Enyaq (still as a prototype) took place in Ireland, as it was a reverence for the origin of the car's name.

The first impression has to do with good stability, aided by the low center of gravity as the heavy battery goes under the floor of the car

.

This also forced the springs and dampers to have slightly stiffer settings, but without compromising ride comfort too much.

The steering seemed accurate to me, but it could be a bit more communicative, a criticism that did not surprise Skoda engineers

who assured that they would try to improve in this regard until the start of series production, which has already started.

The same must be said in relation to the progressivity of the brake pedal, something that we will be able to confirm when the first units arrive on our market at the end of spring.

Regarding the response of the engine (204 hp / 310 Nm in this rear-wheel drive iV 80 version) the assessment is quite positive, with that well-known almost instantaneous trigger (in electric cars) from start-up to 80-90 km / h , losing a bit of shine from then on

. In any case,

less than 9 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h for an SUV that weighs slightly more than tons will be enough

for the majority of future users.

There are already orders placed for Skoda's first electric SUV and the first units will be delivered in May, for prices starting at 39,000 euros (iV 60).

An interesting figure for an SUV with

enough space, with a good boot, range of 390 km, competent behavior, good performance (0 to 100 km / h in 8.7 s, 160 km / h), technological sophistication and a convincing quality of materials / finishes

.
