Many clubs are bleeding financially where revenues during the corona pandemic have dropped markedly where a clear signal was the transfer window that closed just over a week ago.

There, the Premier League clubs spent only close to one billion kroner on player purchases, which was the lowest amount in nine years.

But in the last five years, completely different sums have been in circulation.

The CIES Football Observatory has compiled net spending in the five biggest leagues, the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, looking at the last ten transfer windows between 2016-2021.

Minus in all PL clubs

It shows that not a single one of the 20 Premier League clubs has a positive result in terms of transfers to show during the period.

"Best" is Southampton, which is minus SEK 500 million.

The two clubs that show the biggest minus on transfers are perhaps unsurprisingly the two Manchester clubs.

Manchester City has bought players for more than ten billion kronor and sold for almost four billion, which gives a minus of a total of 631 million euros, corresponding to just over 6.4 billion kronor.

The most expensive signing during this time is the Portuguese defender Rúben Dias who came to the club from Benfica last summer for just over SEK 700 million.

Minus 45 billion in total

Second on the list is Manchester United, which has 586 million euros, equivalent to six billion kronor in the red, where Paul Pogba is the most expensive purchase when he cost just over a billion in the summer of 2016.

On the other hand, Liverpool has just one minus of just over 1.3 billion kroner after having succeeded with several expensive sales and among others Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Aston Villa, Fulham, Brighton and West Ham have significantly more in the red.

In total, the Premier League clubs show a negative result of a staggering SEK 45 billion during the five-year period.

French clubs have positive results

Another club that shows a big minus is Barcelona, despite the fact that they sold Neymar for over two billion to PSG, they still have a minus result of 4.8 billion in transfers.

Recently, the club also reported total debts of 12 billion and it is said to be close to going bankrupt.

But there are also clubs that show big pluses in the CIES Football Observatory compilation.

Three French clubs, Lille, Lyon and Monaco, have over a billion in positive results.

Italian Atalanta also has similar figures.
