With his two goals against RC Strasbourg (3-0 win), Memphis Depay has climbed another place on the Olympique Lyon top scorers list.

The French club captain passed Karim Benzema, who scored 66 goals in Lyon's shirt before leaving for Real Madrid.

"Benzema is an inspiration to me," said Memphis, who is now at 67 hits in French service.

"He moved from Lyon to Real Madrid at a young age and still plays football today."

"Benzema is a great striker who keeps scoring goals. It is an honor to surpass him. I don't want to compare myself to him, I am satisfied with my own performance and statistics."

The now 33-year-old Benzema exchanged Lyon for Real Madrid in 2009, with which the striker won the Champions League four times.

Memphis is chasing his first prize with Lyon this season.

Thanks to the victory over Strasbourg, the team of trainer Rudi Garcia once again settled at the top of the Ligue 1, with one point more than Lille, which will play against Nantes on Sunday.

"We started well, the first half hour we played very strong", said Memphis, who took the opening goal in the 20th minute.

Memphis van Lyon had not scored in the previous four league games.

The attacker of the Dutch national team also hit from a free kick in the second half.

Memphis, who was replaced shortly after his second goal, is now on thirteen goals in the French league this season.

"We know we can do much better."

Lyon last became champion in 2008, then with Benzema as top scorer.
