Atlético is not clear that in two and a half weeks they can host Chelsea at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Spain has restricted flights and passenger ships from the United Kingdom due to the uncertainty about the British variant of the coronavirus and only admits national travelers or residents of Spain or Andorra.

The measure was taken before Christmas and, after three extensions, will remain in force until at least February 16.

The match is scheduled for the 23rd, so a new moratorium would endanger the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

The rojiblanco club looks askance at RB Leipzig-Liverpool.

The game is due to be played within 10 days, but Germany has banned travelers from regions affected by new variants of the virus from entering the country.

Although countries such as the United Kingdom itself have exemptions for elite athletes (in their case, from quarantines), the German Interior Ministry has already announced that it does not contemplate this option and the federal police, in charge of border control, have already rejected the permission that RB Leipzig had requested.

The responsibility of finding an alternative lies with the home team, so if Spain decided to extend the restrictions, Atlético would have to find a solution: find a neutral venue in a country that admits travelers from Spain and the United Kingdom;

change the order of the matches and have the first leg played in London;

or request a postponement, as long as it allows the tie to be resolved on time.

Find a free date

To postpone it, the problem would be to find a free date, because Atlético would not have a gap until the last week of March: between matchdays 26 and 27 there was space on the calendar, but La Liga plans that on that date (day 10) the duel against Athletic postponed due to the snowstorm is disputed.

In that case, the tie would end after the draw for the quarterfinals and semi-finals of the Champions League, which will take place on the 19th. It would not be the first time it has happened, since the draw for the final phase in Lisbon was also held with knockout rounds for the eighth yet to be completed.

The first quarterfinal match will be played on April 6.
