Liverpool had not lost at home to Anfield in 68 games and almost four years.

Then came the meetings with the bottom gangs Burnley and Brighton.

And twice 0-1.

Jürgen Klopp's team seemed to have shaken off the blow against Burnley when there were two away victories in east London (Tottenham and West Ham), but Graham Potter wanted something else.

The former Östersund coach sent out a team that had done its homework, defended its own goal skillfully and occasionally managed to come up with occasional attacks.

- It is not easy to come here and score points.

It is a top team and we are just trying to do our best, Potter says to BT Sports.

"Had our moments"

The home team had already taken the lead after a few minutes, but Mohamed Salah missed one of the few open positions Liverpool were offered - the game dominance was neutralized by a low-playing Brighton with large parts of the midfield around their own penalty area.

- We had our moments but they deserved to win, says Klopp.

The only goal of the match, by Steven Alzate, came in one of the few Brighton attacks.

It was not beautiful but also a broad side from a tangled situation where the defense has gone missing counts.

- The best way to defend against a team like them is to keep the ball and we did not succeed.

It has been a tough week and tonight we were not enough, says Klopp.

Manchester City next

Brighton can with their three fresh points leave the acute bottom battle and now has ten points down to Fulham below the line.

- Every match is a big task for us.

This (victory) is for our supporters and everyone in the club.

It's not often we can come here and win, says Potter about Brighton's first win at Liverpool since 1982.

None of Liverpool's two new acquisitions on Tuesday, Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak, played and in goal Caoimhin Kelleher stood in place of regular Alisson who is ill.

Not covid-19, stressed the Liverpool camp.

Liverpool are in fourth place after the loss, seven points and one game more played than leading Manchester City.

If the reigning champions are to be able to defend their title, it should probably be a victory in the next home game - against Manchester City on Sunday.

Brighton then take on Liverpool's other new horror opponent, Burnley.
