  • After an "insufficient" match at all levels, Stade Rennais was caught up at the very end of the game by their neighbor from Lorient.

  • Les Rouge et Noir saw the top four teams soar in the standings.

  • The goal of the end of the season for the Bretons will therefore be to keep their 5th place.

Cries of joy on one side, downcast looks on the other.

At the final whistle, the contrast was striking this Wednesday evening on the lawn of Roazhon Park.

However, it was in a draw that the Breton derby between Rennes and Lorient ended (1-1).

But in this meeting which did not reach peaks, far from it, it was the Merlus who carried out the beautiful operation, continuing their momentum after their victories against Dijon and PSG.

Rennes, on the other hand, clearly marks time with only one victory in its last five games.

But more than the result, it is above all the way that worries.

"We played an insufficient game with a lot of waste and an overall lack of control and mastery," conceded coach Julien Stéphan.

Stade Rennais had started the game well, suffocating their opponent and opening the scoring from the quarter of an hour of play through Martin Terrier.

“But after the goal, I already felt a drop in tension,” said the Rennes coach.

Jérémy Doku had the ball of the KO

As often this season, the Red and Black then had control of the ball without being dangerous.

Jérémy Doku had the KO ball in his feet at the hour mark but the young Belgian winger ate the leaf, Jérémy Morel saving his team with the thigh.

And by dint of purring, Stade Rennais ended up being sanctioned by the Lorientais who ended the match with a bang, equalizing with a superb volley from Boisgard (83rd).

"Each team had its half-time so the point of a draw is deserved," said Lorient coach Christophe Pélissier.

Rennes will have to whip to keep its 5th place

Still in the top 5 at the end of the 23rd day, Julien Stéphan's men, on the other hand, almost said goodbye to the four leading teams.

“The pace is very sustained up front and today we cannot compare ourselves to these teams,” admitted Damien Da Silva.

"We do not have the same consistency or the same qualities as these big teams, we must also admit," continued the Rennes captain, back from injury.

For Julien Stéphan's men, the objective of the end of the season will therefore be to keep this fifth place, synonymous with European qualification.

But in view of their indigestible performance this Wednesday evening, the mission is far from won.

“We will have to show something else and a lot more qualities than that if we want to stay at the top of the ranking,” said Julien Stéphan.

There are a lot of teams looking for this fifth place and today we have not shown the quality, especially on a technical level, of a team which is fifth in the championship ”.
