Mats Hummels could play for the German national team at the Olympic Games.

The 32-year-old world champion from 2014, who was eliminated from the A-team by national coach Joachim Löw in March 2019, is on the corresponding list of the National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada).

Only those who are on this list could also attend the games in Tokyo, which will take place from July 23 to August 8.

On Wednesday evening, Hummels explained this on the “Clubhouse” audio app.

Thomas Müller, who like Hummels has not been considered by Löw for the senior national team for 22 months, is not on the Nada list.

This means that the offensive player from Bayern Munich could not take part in the Olympics.

Max Kruse from Union Berlin, on the other hand, is on the list, which should include a total of 50 professionals.

At the games, German football is represented by the U21 national team - the line-up may, however, be filled with three older players.

"Football fans expect that the most prominent names will be in our squad," said U21 coach Stefan Kuntz.

Older players?

"Our last piece of the puzzle"

However, this decision will be made in the end.

“But the three older players will be our last piece of the puzzle.

After the season, we first see which players and positions we can fill with the current U21 squad and the 97-year-old. ”Kuntz won't decide on the final composition of the squad until June.

Dortmund's manager Michael Zorc reacted with a smile on Thursday.

“It is now far too early to be able to say anything definitive.

Maybe he'll jump on the EM train, ”said Zorc.

But he confirmed that there had been a meeting with Olympic coach Stefan Kuntz.

“He submitted his ideas and concepts to us,” said Zorc: “It's a very large list.

Of course, every coach wants to have a sensible structure of experienced and young players. "

The chances for three older players to enjoy an Olympic participation are good, however.

After all, the U21 European Championship is also coming up this year.

And Kuntz had already stated that "no player will take part in two tournaments - the Euro and the Olympics."
