Max Meyer is now back in the Bundesliga.

The former Schalke player has joined the relegation-threatened 1. FC Köln after prematurely terminating his working paper at the Premier League club Crystal Palace in mid-January.

The midfielder receives a contract until the end of the season.

“The move to FC was only possible because Max was extremely accommodating to us financially.

He can play in several positions in midfield, is intelligent, has a very good ball and is happy to finish himself, ”commented FC managing director Horst Heldt about the change.

Meyer now wants to collect more match practice in Cologne and make himself interesting for clubs.

But Cologne could also benefit.

The financial risk should be kept within limits, the player is said to have largely received his contract with Crystal Palace.

In terms of sport, one hopes from Meyer that he will upgrade the recently weak offensive game.

“For me, the perspective was crucial to be able to play.

I want to use the chance at FC to present myself at the top level and help ensure that the club keeps the class, ”said Meyer.

He could already celebrate his debut in the FC jersey against Arminia Bielefeld (3:30 p.m.) on Sunday.

From "world class player" to professional without a contract

Meyer moved to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2018 after 192 appearances and 22 goals for FC Schalke, where he made his professional debut as a 17-year-old at the beginning of 2013.

For the English club he appeared 56 times and scored two goals.

The now 25-year-old turned down offers to extend his contract to Schalke, the then manager Christian Heidel made details of the negotiations public.

Meyer is said to have been dubbed a "world class player" by his advisor Roger Wittmann.

At his ex-club, the player not only has the broken negotiations from 2018, but also a video from his father, for which he then apologized publicly.

Most recently, Meyer was also associated with a move to his ex-club Schalke.

Cologne boss Heldt knows the midfielder from the times they shared in Gelsenkirchen.
