Sweden needed at least one point against the Russian national team to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

There were two - and there was no talk about it.

Most of it went Sweden's way and at the break the lead was 17-8.

Sweden, however, opened the second in the worst possible way.

The Russians made it 3-0 the first three minutes and shrank the deficit to 11-17.

But after that it settled down.

The Swedish goal production started and Andreas Palicka played great between the posts.

With a quarter left to play, Sweden led by 13 balls.

Even in the superb first half, defense and goalkeeping games held the highest class and it took a full seven minutes before the Russians cracked the goal zero.

However, they had the chance to put the first goal on penalty two minutes earlier, but then Palicka stood in the way.

The Swedish goalkeeper got his right hand over his head and saved the penalty throw.

After twelve minutes, the Russians took time out - then Sweden led 7-2 after, among other things, four goals by Hampus Wanne.

But it did'nt help.

Sweden continued to scoop up at the same time as the defense was compact.

Maybe it got the Russians out of balance.

With seven minutes left in the first half, Jim Gottfridsson went downhill after an ugly foul.

Gottfridsson was on his way to the Russian defense when Sergei Kudinov grabbed his shotgun and tore it down.

Kudinov, however, managed with a two-minute suspension.

It ended in a Swedish victory with 34-20.

Sweden thus wins the group and avoids Denmark in the quarterfinals.
