In the season's premiere match last week, Toronto's forward William Nylander scored two goals - but since then they have been happy with their absence for the star, who has now gone goalless in four straight games.

Against Edmonton, Nylander had several shots on goal, but goalkeeper Mikko Koskinen stood in the way each time.

Toronto came to the match with two straight victories, Edmonton with the same number of losses.

Still, it was Edmonton who struck 1-0 in the middle of the first period.

Kailer Yamamoto was awarded the goal after the puck took on several Toronto players, including William Nylander, on his way into the goal.

Toronto managed to equalize in the third period, when Auston Matthews got the puck in from a narrow angle from the side, but the joy was short-lived.

Just two and a half minutes later, Leon Draisaitl put 2-1 in powerplay, after catching a return that took the road via Jesse Puljujärvi's legs.

It was the first powerplay goal in 15 attempts for Edmonton this season.

Measure in an empty cage at the end

The match was then punctured when Josh Archibald was able to put 3-1 in an empty cage, with just over a minute left.

- I think we were very stable for 60 minutes, all four chains, the slopes, and of course our goalkeeper were important to us tonight, Leon Draisaitl said after the match, reports nhl.com.

The loss means that Toronto is second in the Canadian division after five games played, which is one match more than the one Montreal has had time for.

Edmonton is in fifth place, also with five games played.

To reduce travel, the seven Canadian teams in the North American hockey league only meet in the basic game.
