Swiss hockey journalist Klaus Zaugg writes that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will announce the decision on Monday.

According to Zaugg's article on the site Watson, the World Cup will be moved from Belarus to either Denmark, Slovakia or Latvia.

The latter country is already a co-organizer, as Latvia was awarded the World Cup together with Belarus.

"Message in the near future"

Anders Larsson, chairman of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, expects to know more soon.

- That there is now information about alternative organizers, we interpret as another sign that the IIHF is working intensively on the issue.

We respect the fact that this is a complicated situation, not only in the light of the situation in Belarus but also in the current pandemic.

We know that the IIHF board will meet tomorrow (Monday) and we expect a decision on the WC issue in the near future, says Larsson to Aftonbladet.

Belarus has been shaken by regime-critical protests since the presidential election in August, when Alexander Lukashenko declared himself the winner.

Big sponsor can drop out

Meanwhile, more and more votes have been raised to move the hockey World Cup.

Both other hockey federations and politicians have said that the championship should be moved from Belarus, but so far the IIHF has not been willing to meet the critics.

On Saturday, one of the main sponsors, the Czech car manufacturer Skoda, also went out and said that they would drop the collaboration if the World Cup was not moved.

- The pressure on the IIHF in the World Cup issue has increased drastically in recent days after the IIHF management's high-profile visit to Minsk and the big sponsor's announcement this weekend.

The pressure is also great from several of us participating nations.

From the Swedish side, we announced even before Christmas that we believe that it is not possible to hold the World Cup in Belarus in the current situation, says Anders Larsson.

The World Cup will be decided May 21-June 6.
