Chief Public Prosecutor Kai Gräber had demanded a prison sentence of five and a half years for Mark S., the defense lawyers hoped for a maximum of around three years.

Now, after 23 days of taking evidence and pleading, the verdict in the doping trial against the Erfurt doctor and his accomplices has been passed before the Regional Court of Munich II.

The main defendant receives a prison sentence of four years and ten months, as well as a professional ban of three years.

The four helpers were also found guilty.

The five defendants and above all the doctor as the organizer of the sports fraud are responsible for years of blood doping against numerous winter and cycling athletes.

The original indictment mentioned almost 150 individual acts.

The court summarized these per season and athlete.

This resulted in 26 units of crime, committed by twelve athletes.

All five of the defendants had made confessions.

Mark S. admitted to being the head of the group.

This was also confirmed by chat logs from secured cell phones.

Athletes testified that they felt in good hands with the doctor and therefore had no fear for their health.

Once, however, the Erfurt native accidentally injected an athlete with a preparation that was not intended for use on humans.

The public prosecutor's office rated this as dangerous bodily harm.
