Marco van Ginkel had a special evening on Wednesday despite PSV's 1-3 defeat against AZ.

The midfielder made his comeback in the game after more than 2.5 years of injury.

"Personally, this is a highlight," said Van Ginkel after the game against

"I worked hard for it and it took a long time. Being back now feels like a reward."

"I was there again against Ajax", he continued.

"Then I already tasted the atmosphere and I got a bit of everything in the stadium. Today I noticed that something had to be done when we were behind.

The eight-time Orange-international came into the field for Mohamed Ihattaren three minutes before the end.

It is his first playing minutes since PSV-FC Groningen on May 8, 2018.

After that match, Van Ginkel had to recover from a serious knee injury.

And after an operation a setback in his rehabilitation followed.

He returned to the Chelsea training ground at the end of 2019, but his comeback in competition was not yet due.

After the game against AZ, the 28-year-old midfielder did not seem to fully realize that he had made his comeback.

"At home I am going to put everything in perspective, because that is a lot. In the end I worked hard for it and I am proud to be back."

'I've been through a lot of emotional things'

Van Ginkel came into action against AZ for the first time in 983 days.

"Eventually I stopped counting the days. I was only working on my recovery, hoping to be able to play football again. There was also a period when that chance was a lot smaller. I went through a lot of emotional things. In the end. I stand here and then congratulations are appropriate. "

De Amersfoorter regularly had quite a hard time during the injuries.

"During that period all kinds of things went through my mind. A thousand days, then there are also enough bad ones. Fortunately some positive ones too. The fire has always kept burning. That was necessary, otherwise I would not have made it."

Van Ginkel is rented from Chelsea for the fourth time by PSV this season.

He became champion with PSV in 2016 and 2018.

At Chelsea, which in the meantime also loaned him to AC Milan and Stoke City, he only came to two league matches.
