At the end of November, Mikaela Shiffrin did her first competition after her father, Jeff Shiffrin, died after an accident in February last year.

The comeback became emotional and finished with a second place behind Petra Vlhova.

Shiffrin emotional in the comeback: "Just wanted to start a competition"

Then the result line is: 5th, 4th, 1st, 3rd, 4th.

"It's not easy"

Ahead of tonight's slalom in Flachau, Austria, Shiffrin, who has 67 World Cup victories in total, is asked how she sees people getting used to always seeing her on top.

- I've said it before, but it's not easy - and at some point you feel a little whiny, like I'm complaining.

But the point I want to make is not that it is so difficult just for me, but you have to respect those who do something good for exactly what it is, says Shiffrin and continues:

- It is not possible to compare someone who has won a World Cup race with someone who has won 67. Or someone who does covid-19 tests every single day and who works extra sessions during the pandemic.

Or someone trying to learn the most difficult piano piece of all time.

- It is never easy to do what you do very, very well.

I think it's something everyone can actually relate to, but absolutely - when you watch it on TV at the same time as it happens, you might think it must be simple.

But it is not.

And it's not whining or complaining, it's just the way it is.

Likes Flachaus hill

The first time Shiffrin competed in Flachau, 2011, she did not advance to the second race.

Since then, there have been only podium places: three victories, one second place and three third places.

- I really like this hill, but at the same time not.

I do not really know how to describe it otherwise, says Shiffrin and laughs.

- I have done fantastic races here and I have had challenging races here.

Normally, this race is the end of an intense period for us and I am usually completely finished.

I can barely stand or look straight, let alone drive well.

It is one of the most challenging slopes we have, it is very built-in terrain that does not feel so natural.

We do not have much of it otherwise.

But it is also one of the most fun slopes when you get to it.

It's a bit like a roller coaster - though you're in control.

The slalom from Flachau is broadcast on SVT2 and SVT Play starting at 18.00.
