The decision was made at a meeting where Federal President Hassan Moustafa met with, among others, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Health Minister Hala Zayed.

"All parties agreed that the 27th World Championships for men will be decided without spectators in order to guarantee that all participants are safe and healthy," the association writes on its website.

The criticism of allowing upwards of 4,000 people at the World Cup matches in handball has been great.

In a letter to the association, the European Players' Union has protested against the choice to let spectators into the arenas.

One of those who stood behind the letter was the Swedish goalkeeper Andreas Palicka.

- I do not think that the World Cup should be played with an audience, he told TT last Friday.

The World Cup starts on Wednesday and Sweden opens against the Czech Republic on Thursday.
