The Spanish Football League said in a statement that the match scheduled for Saturday between Atlético Madrid and its host Athletic Bilbao has been postponed to a later date due to the effects of a snowstorm that hit Spain.

And due to the heavy snow as a result of the storm Filomena, many roads were closed on Friday, leaving many drivers stranded, and Madrid's capital airport was also closed.

The association said it had taken the decision to postpone "given the exceptional situation caused by the storm in large parts of the peninsula ... and the confirmed impact of the storm on the stadium."

The League indicated that it would set a new date for the match at a later time.

Bilbao said on Friday that the plane carrying the team had been unable to land at Barajas airport in the capital and had to return.

"Athletic Bilbao would like to thank Atlético de Madrid for their cooperation and endeavor to find solutions during this difficult situation," Bilbao said in a statement.

Atletico Madrid leads the Spanish league with 38 points from 15 games, while Bilbao is ninth with 21 points from 18 games.

Doubts also arose about Real Madrid's match with Osasuna on the latter's ground, scheduled for Saturday, after the plane carrying the Spanish champion faced difficulties at Barajas International Airport in the capital on Friday due to the accumulation of snow on the runway.

However, Spanish media said the match was expected to be played on schedule nonetheless.
