• Controversy: a slower overtaking that will avoid thousands of resources

  • Changes. 2021 arrives: more expensive and 'slow' cars, payment for highways, new fines ...

Never, since accident statistics are made in Spain, have there been so few deaths in road traffic accidents as in 2020:

870 deaths, 231 less than a year before, with a reduction of 21%.

"But we are not going to talk about a triumphalist balance,

because that figure or the more than 3,400 seriously injured are unacceptable data for society," Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said during the presentation of the balance.

In fact, the minister acknowledged that a large part of this result has been achieved thanks to the halt in activity and movements caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Displacements that fell more than the victims did: 321 million road trips were recorded (more than 40 kilometers long), which is 25% less.

One in four died in a car, without a belt

In addition, although during the past year up to 59 days were counted in which they were not counted, data as negative as the 125 people who died aboard a passenger car or a van without using a seat belt also stood out.

"Half of them would have saved their lives," said the politician, who wanted to contrast it with the use of helmets among motorcyclists.

Only 2% of the deceased did not wear it, half the number a year earlier.

In addition, this group was the one with the best behavior among the so-called vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists and motorists), since the total number of victims fell to 189 people, 97 less, with a decrease of 34%).

In the breakdown of data provided by Interior, three phases stand out:

from January 1 to March 14, there were 8% more deaths on the road.

From March 15 to June 20, in the harshest phase of lockdown, that number fell by 59%.

Then, these downward trends continued until December 31, with 12% less.

Better highways and highways, worse on highway

By type of road, on highways and highways the accident rate fell by -34%, while on

two-way roads it only did so by 17%, which has led these roads to concentrate 77% of the deaths within 24 hours on the highway.

They are two points more than the average of the last five years, but Grande-Marlaska considered that it is a small deviation that does not have to hide new causes of accidents.

Regarding the types of accidents, the greatest decrease took place in rear and multiple collisions (-36%), and frontal (-31%).

On the other hand, the exits of the road accumulate 44% of deaths on the road, 444 deaths, only 11% less.

"That is to say, here the responsibility has to be attributed exclusively to the driver, be it for excessive speed, consumption of alcohol and drugs or distractions, especially the use of mobile phones"
