Karim Benzema must still appear in court for his part in the extortion case surrounding Mathieu Valbuena, a public prosecutor in France announced on Thursday.

A friend of Benzema allegedly blackmailed his fellow international in 2015 with a sex video.

The Real Madrid attacker reportedly advised Valbuena to pay the demanded amount of 150,000 euros.

Benzema, who has never been selected for the French team since the affair in 2015, has always denied his involvement.

He previously asked the French justice to stop the investigation, but now, along with four other suspects, has to face trial for attempted blackmail and abuse of trust.

33-year-old Benzema played 81 caps for France, in which he scored 27 goals.

Without the Real Madrid striker, 'Les Bleus' reached the final of the European Championship 2016 and became world champions in 2018.

Benzema's last international match dates from October 2015.

Benzema is top scorer at Real this season with eight goals.

In the absence of Sergio Ramos, Benzema was still captain of the Madrid against RC Celta (2-0 win) on Saturday.

Valbuena currently plays for the Greek Olympiacos, PSV's upcoming opponent in the Europa League.
