A boxer signed down and died in connection with a gala in Albania in September 2019, where several Swedes were.

After the boxing world first reported that it was 21-year-old Bulgarian Isus Velichkov who died, it turned out that it was in fact his cousin Boris - who illegally borrowed his license and boxed under a false name.

Isus later told the channel BTV that Boris played eight professional matches under a false name.

This is to gain experience before he started competing under his own name.

"I did not hesitate to box"

Swedish star Patricia Berghult was boxed at the same gala in Albania, just hours after the fatal accident.

- I remember that everything was shifted and that we walked around there and waited without knowing anything.

All coaches gathered and had a meeting to discuss whether the gala should be canceled, but they landed in that those who wanted to box were allowed to do so but that it was perfectly okay to abstain.

And there was no doubt on your part?

- Not from my side.

We had gone any length of time to get there and get boxed.

But it is clear that it was still in the back of my mind that "shit, two hours ago it was actually a guy who died here".

- But then you also have to look at who he met and how his journey was.

There were many factors that made it so.

He had taken his cousin's identity and at a serious gala such a thing would never happen.

"Train a lot in defense"

When the accident occurred, Berghult was in the room, but stood some distance away and warmed up.

- I did not see the actual blow or knock, but I saw when he lay down and they started giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The doctors ran into the ring to try to get him started.

I think he died in the ambulance or in the hospital.

How nasty was it for you?

- Of course it's never nice.

When they started giving him CPR, I went to Dad and the other boxes.

Even if you know what's going on, you do not have to look directly at it, so I actually left.

Has it affected your view of boxing anything?

- Not directly.

Boxing is about

not

being hit.

We train a lot to protect ourselves and you can not go around thinking "oh, now I can be knocked" or "what if I get knocked and what happens then?".

Did you make any adjustments with the training after that, for example with sparring?

- It is not the case that we suddenly come to the conclusion that "today we will spar" but there is always a periodization and a thought behind it.

You can not spar all the time, but you put it in if you know you are going to a match, says Berghult.
