Manchester City will open an internal investigation after French defender Benjamin Mendy violated health protocol relating to Covid-19 by hosting New Year's Eve at his home, the English club announced on Sunday.

"The club are aware of the New Year's Eve Covid-19 protocol violation involving Benjamin Mendy and the resulting media coverage," a Manchester City spokesperson said.

"Even though elements of this incident were misinterpreted in the articles and the player has issued a public apology after this error, the club regrets to learn of this transgression and will conduct an internal investigation," he continued.

According to the British tabloid The Sun, the French international has authorized a chef and two other people to come to his property in Cheshire, contrary to the current regulations in force in the country.

A spokesperson for the player did not deny the allegations written in the press.

Benjamin Mendy “accepts that this constitutes a violation of the protocols relating to Covid-19 and is sorry for his role in this matter.

Ben was tested for Covid and is in contact with Manchester City about it ”.

The Citizens are among the clubs heavily affected by the virus in recent days.

The match against Everton scheduled for December 28 was postponed at the last moment due to cases in the Mancunian workforce.

Sunday, Pep Guardiola is deprived of five players, positive, for the match at Chelsea.

London club Tottenham announced on Saturday that they were taking disciplinary action against players Erik Lamela, Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso, after the trio were seen attending a party together.
