The now well-known gabber hardcore beats that always accompany his deafening walk-on had not yet faded away when Dirk van Duijvenbode had already made the first mistake - and chose the wrong table.

An error that would not be worth mentioning had it not been for the table gate four days ago in the third round of the Darts World Championship and the Dutchman had not done it twice shortly afterwards.

Deliberate provocation or unintentional error?

The high-flyer from the Netherlands also made too many mistakes in his first World Cup quarter-finals.

Opponent Gary Anderson prevailed at the express pace with 5: 1.

The world champion from 2015 and 2016 rose again at this tournament, cracking the 100 limit for the first time with an average of 101.7 and finishing with a checkout rate of 50 percent.

The 50-year-old threw six 180s, deleted 80 points over tops-tops and named "the many 140s" after the match as evidence of his convincing performance.

It was 24 after the five sets that he had dominated in an impressive manner from round two to round five with ten legs in a row.

In the end, only the question of van Duijvenbode's errors remained open.

The first wrong table choice might have been due to the excitement before the duel with his idol Anderson, but the immediate repetition seemed more like a planned act of provocation, or at least a return coach.

After Anderson's walk-on, the Dutchman had posted himself as a mandatory greeting, wanted to laugh again with Anderson about the wrong table choice, but was left standing by the Scot.

Van Duijvenbode then turned to his table and sharpened the tips he had just worked on.

On the way to the first trial throws at the oche, Anderson remained without a greeting, so that van Duijvenbode waited in front of his first arrows, shook his fist and then went to the wrong table again.

The background to the story was the dispute between Anderson and Mensur Suljovic in the third round, when the Austrian put himself at the wrong table, repeatedly dragged the pace during the match and annoyed Anderson with it.

This time, however, Anderson did not allow himself to be distracted and after losing the first set drove a sure win, while van Duijvenbode appeared again at Anderson's table in the middle of the match and even drank from the “Flying Scotsman” bottle.

"That was good," said Anderson afterwards about his performance, which, however, was not yet comparable with the quality of the 2015 and 2016 world championship years.

When asked about the scaling of his shape, Anderson named "a two out of ten" with a grin.

In the semifinals on Saturday he will meet Michael van Gerwen or Dave Chisnall, whom he will grant the world championship title like no other.

Stephen Bunting takes out the fishing rod

In the first quarter-finals of the day Stephen Bunting continued his surprising winning move and defeated Krzysztof Ratajski 5: 3.

The Englishman, who hit 19 of his 35 attempts on the doubles, achieved a 100+ average at a world championship for the first time in his career: 101.01.

Satisfied, he went into the break and repeatedly cast an imaginary fishing rod as he walked off the stage.
