Not expected, the blow suffered this Sunday by the Athletic Board of Directors loses value or significance.

60% of the rojiblanco club's compromise members have overturned the accounts presented by president Aitor Elizegi and his team, a historical rejection due to its magnitude, which had not been experienced in recent decades and which perfectly sums up the social tension that It has been living for months in the Bilbao entity.

The 2019/20 accounting close has received the rejection of 60% of the partners and the support of 37%.

The budget for this season has received 61% of noes and 35% of yeses.

And the star project of Elizegi's mandate, the reunification of the animation stands behind one of the San Mamés goals, has also been knocked down, although by a much narrower margin: 339 votes in favor and 348 against.

All this in an assembly held for the first time in history electronically, due to the sanitary restrictions that prevented its celebration in person.

The 2020 meeting is the first failed ordinary assembly since 2007, when then-president Fernando García Macua proposed a 14% quota increase.

The rejection then, however, was 56%, compared to 40% of support.

Macua managed to carry out the accounts in a second assembly, called a couple of months later.

That is the procedure that Elizegi will have to follow now.

There is no precedent for a rejection of accounts in the second instance and the statutes do not include this hypothesis either, so it is unknown what would happen in such a case.

What is evident is that Elizegi's legitimacy as president of Athletic would be deeply damaged and that his continuity in Ibaigane's chair would be seriously compromised.

Not statutorily, but socially.

Three factors explain the blow suffered this Sunday by Elizegi.

In the first place, the frontal rejection generated in part of the social mass since he was elected president in December 2018 by a difference of 85 votes with the 'dolphin' of the outgoing Josu Urrutia, Alberto Uribe-Echevarría.

Already last year, after just 10 months in office, Elizegi carried out the accounts by just eight votes difference, without even reaching 50% of the support of the delegates.

But beyond that undisguised opposition on the part of the assembly (formed, in accordance with the club's statutes, in Urrutia's time), the quota proposal in times of pandemic has met with great rejection.

Elizegi suggested that all members pay 30% of their quota to cover expenses not related to the Athletic first team, even if they cannot go to San Mamés.

An idea that has not had a great reception among a social mass that has not understood because that basic quota was percentage and not linear, appealing to equality among partners.

A final determining factor is the management of the board itself, especially with regard to the men's first team.

Episodes such as Llorente's failed return, the almost public doubts about Garitano's continuity, the poor football displayed by the team, as well as the debatable public interventions by Elizegi himself and the sports director, Rafa Alkorta, have greatly diminished confidence in the team. board of directors of the rojiblanca social mass, just when the four-year term of Elizegi is reached.
