The new Schalke coach Christian Gross is hoping for newcomers in winter despite the financially strained situation at the Bundesliga club.

“Of course there are always wishes, we try to make the best of what is feasible,” said the 66-year-old Swiss at his introduction.

"The financial situation is obviously very, very tense, but the club is ready to do everything to make this mission a success."

Schalke wants Marco Richter

According to "Bild", the Royal Blues are interested in attacking player Marco Richter from FC Augsburg.

The 23-year-old is to be loaned out.

Sports director Jochen Schneider said of possible newcomers: "We want to and will do everything we are able to."

Gross does not see his lack of experience in top European football in recent years as a major disadvantage.

"Football is also played in Africa," he said in response to criticism from the environment.

The Swiss last worked as a coach for Young Boys Bern in European football eight years ago.

He then worked in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

"Addressing the players will be crucial," said Gross.

The veteran receives a contract with Schalke until the end of the season, but according to his own statement he could also imagine a commitment beyond that in the event of relegation.

“The question arises when the time comes.

I still have a lot of energy, ”he said.

"The club then decides what the future looks like."
