It will be Arnar Vidarsson, 42, who replaces Swedish Erik Hamrén as the national team captain for Iceland's men's national football team, the Icelandic national team announced on Tuesday.

But that does not mean that Lars Lagerbäck, who has been rumored to be on his way back to Icelandic football, is fully calculated.

The newly appointed national team captain Vidarsson says that he hopes to meet the 72-year-old Swede, who during his time as the Icelandic national team captain led the nation to his first major championship, soon.

Vidarsson would like to have Lagerbäck in some role.

- We talked to Lars.

We are very tagged on having Lars with us in the World Cup qualifiers.

He has incredibly great experience and qualities as a coach.

We believe that, if Lars is ready to come and help us, it will strengthen the entire environment around the entire national team, says Vidarsson to fotbolti.net, reports TV4's Fotbollskanalen.

Lagerbäck was fired as the national team captain for Norway's national team in early December, but has a high status in Iceland.

Icelandic media have previously reported that several key players in Iceland's national team have expressed a desire to get the Swede back.
