Martí Estela
, goalkeeper of the CN Barcelona, Eurocup team this season, died this Friday as a result of a traffic accident that occurred in the center of Barcelona hours before, on Thursday afternoon.
According to police sources, the water polo player hit a car with his motorcycle at the crossroads between Balmes and Gran Via de les Corts.
Estela was well known in his sport after being international in the lower categories and competing for the Barcelona club in recent seasons.
"Tremendously sad hours for our sport. One of ours has left. Too soon. Too unfair. The most sincere condolences to family, colleagues and friends. You will always be with us, Martí," the Spanish water polo team tweeted about the death of the 28-year-old goalkeeper who became world runner-up in junior category in 2011
After that early success, Estela dropped out of water polo to focus on her cooking studies at the well-known Hoffman school and returned to the sport after gaining experience abroad and in various Michelin-starred kitchens.
Born in the Barcelona neighborhood of El Clot, CN Barcelona called on him to help their young goalkeepers and he ended up starting the team last season.
