Eight Dutch footballers have a chance to be included in the 2020 world team. Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong are among the 55 nominees for the men and Sari van Veenendaal, Stefanie van der Gragt, Daniëlle van de Donk, Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema.

The list has been drawn up by the international players' union FIFPRO and the world football association FIFA.

All professional footballers can vote.

Next Thursday, the 'best' team of 2020 will be presented at the FIFA gala The Best, which is being held online due to the corona crisis.

Van Dijk (playing at Liverpool), De Ligt (Juventus) and De Jong (FC Barcelona) also secured a place in the 2019 world team last year. De Ligt and De Jong had this thanks to the impressive Champions League adventure at the time. with Ajax, which then progressed to the semi-finals.

Incidentally, Van Dijk, who has been eliminated for at least a few months due to a serious knee injury, is also in the race for the title of best footballer of the year.

He has to deal with, among others, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski.

Van Veenendaal also in the 2019 world team

Van Veenendaal also got a place in the 2019 world team. The PSV keeper, who came over from Atlético Madrid last summer, was also named the best goalkeeper in the world last year.

That happened after a strong performance at the World Cup, where the Orange women reached the final.

Miedema, who has had an impressive year at Arsenal, has not only been nominated for the world team, but is also one of eleven candidates for the prize for the best football player of the year.

She has competition for that from Lucy Bronze, Pernille Harder and Wendie Renard, among others.

The FIFA gala was initially scheduled for September, but was then postponed due to the corona crisis.

Other elections, such as the presentation of the Golden Ball by the French magazine
