Bill to print Maradona's image on Argentine banknotes

An Argentine senator wants to print Diego Maradona's picture on the country's banknotes, and yesterday she submitted a bill to Congress to place the late soccer star on the 1,000 peso note.

Senator Norma Durango said the bill, worth about $ 12.27, would show Maradona's face on one side and a picture of his hand that rocked England's World Cup on the other side.

The goal, scored by Maradona against goalkeeper Peter Shelton, was one of two goals scored by the legend in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final victory 2--1. Argentina won the World Cup after repeated creativity from Maradona, who died on November 25 of a heart attack at the age of 60.

"The idea is not to honor our most important myth, but also to think about the economic impact. We feel that when tourists come here they will want to have Maradona with them," Durango said.

Durango did not mention the reason for choosing the famous goal by hand, instead of Maradona's second goal, which came with great individual skill and is among the best goals in history.

But she said the door was open for lawmakers to amend her proposal, which is expected to be discussed at the start of the new year.

Currently, the 1,000 peso note bears the image of the national bird, Rufus Hornero.
