Valencia Marathon, the third fastest marathon in the world and Juan Roig is still committed to the world record
Half Marathon: Kenyan Kandie smashes the world record in half a minute
It has taken 14 years for Spain's
marathon
record to fall
, a record on which the shadow of doping has always weighed.
It was achieved by
Julio Rey
in the 2006 Hamburg Marathon with a time of 2:06:52 five years after serving two penalties for having tested positive for an anabolic steroid in the Spanish Cross Championship and in the Rotterdam Marathon.
The place in the history of Spanish athletics was taken from him yesterday in Valencia by
Ayad Lamdassem
, who lowered the mark by 17 seconds (2:06:35) to become the fastest athlete in the country in the 42.195 kilometers.
Lamdassem, who was born in Morocco but deserted at the age of 19 from a concentration in his country in Spain to stay in Lleida, was the first European to cross the finish line after the victory of
Evans Chebet
, who with 2:03:00 set a new test record and made the Valencia Marathon the third fastest in history.
Spain's record fell unexpectedly, because although it was
Marta Galimany's
goal to
knock down
Ana Isabel Alonso's
female brand
, which dates back to 1995, Lamdassem went running in Valencia in search of only her best time.
"I wanted to beat my personal best, which is seven years ago, but after spending half the race I felt that it was my day to make a mark," the 39-year-old veteran athlete acknowledged at the finish line, wearing the Club Bikila shirt and Nike's carbon fiber sneakers, technology that is helping to blast times.
In his case almost three minutes.
The new national record holder arrived in Valencia with discretion and a time of 2.09: 28, but he already had his good moment in the World Half Marathon Championship that was held in October in Gdynia (Poland).
He was then the best Spaniard with 1:01:21 which represented a new personal best and that he grants the second best national time in the distance.
Half Marathon World Record
The world record set by Juan Roig -who will continue to financially support the race until 2024- did not fall in the Valencian event, but it did in the Half Marathon.
Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie struck the mark set by Geoffrey Kamworor in 2019 in Copenhagen in almost half a minute to leave it at 57:32.
But in the feat he was accompanied by three other athletes who also fell for the first time in the history of 58 minutes: Kiplimo, Kipruto and Mutiso.
He beat them, he confessed, for his explosiveness in the last five kilometers.
In the women's category, the Valencia Marathon also broke its record.
Peres Jepchirchir
(2:17:16) was the winner with the fifth best record of all time.
In the Half Marathon, the winner was rookie
Genzebe Dibaba
(1:05:18).
