PSV qualified for the knock-out phase of the Europa League on Thursday.

The Eindhoven team won 0-1 at Granada and saw competitor PAOK with 2-1 losses at Omonia Nicosia.

PSV, which played particularly well in the first half, won thanks to a goal by Donyell Malen shortly before half-time.

It is the first time since the 2015/2016 season that the club will also be active in Europe after the winter break.

Next week PSV will play at home against Omonia only for the sporting honor.

Despite the defeat against the Eindhoven team, Granada is also certain of a place in the first two in group E.

The downside for PSV was that Noni Madueke, Denzel Dumfries and Eran Zahavi were injured.

An away game against sc Heerenveen is scheduled for Sunday in the Eredivisie for trainer Roger Schmidt's team.

Malen gives PSV the lead

PSV played a strong first half against the Spanish subtopper Granada, although that only resulted in a few chances.

After 20 minutes, Malen shot just wide and moments later a free kick by Philipp Max from the edge of the penalty area was too soft to surprise goalkeeper Rui Silva.

The deserved opening goal was scored five minutes before half time.

Max was launched on the left flank and found Malen with his low cross, who shot in between two defenders: 0-1.

Early in the second half, captain Dumfries was close to scoring after good work by Mario Götze, but Silva just got a hand against the bet of the right back.

Shortly afterwards, PSV could not complain that the referee saw no penalty in a collision between Dumfries, goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo and Colombian striker Luis Suárez of Granada.

Granada comes into the game better

With half an hour to play, Granada got into the game better, but a header from Darwin Machís and a free shot from Yangel Herrera went wide of Mvogo's goal.

PSV striker Zahavi, who already filled in for the injured Madueke before the break, was not successful on the other side with a nice bicycle kick.

PSV also saw Dumfries and Zahavi drop out injured and lurked mainly on the counter in the last half hour.

That resulted in a number of dangerous moments, but the sharpness in the completion was lacking at Malen and Cody Gakpo, among others.

Granada tried in the final stages with opportunistic play and that resulted in some perilous moments in the penalty area, but Mvogo kept his goal clean without too much trouble.

As a result, PSV not only booked its first win ever on Spanish soil, but it is also certain of European wintering for the first time in five years.
