The spread of infection in recent weeks has meant that the lives of private individuals have been limited.

For elite sports, this has meant, among other things, no spectators and postponed matches.

Amanda Lind, Minister of Culture and Democracy and Minister with responsibility for sports issues, nevertheless thinks that it should continue.

- I think it is important, and has been important throughout the pandemic, that sports should be able to continue as far as possible.

Not least for the children, but also for the elite athletes, those whose profession is sports.

Then it is not the government that decides whether training and competition should be able to continue, we regulate the audience issue through the law of order, she says to SVT Sport.

"It is important"

She still believes that sports clubs can do even more to reduce the spread of infection.

- What I think is important, not least now that we have stricter restrictions and we see a serious spread of infection, is that all businesses really see what can be done to minimize the risk of infection.

What allows the sport to be up and running now, but not this spring?

- In the beginning, when the pandemic swept across the country, there were very many activities that stopped.

Even sports.

It was on the advice of the Public Health Agency.

Since then, sport has developed careful protocols for how to limit the spread of infection.

The Swedish Public Health Agency and the Swedish Sports Confederation also have a very close dialogue.

Then we are in a special period right now when we have very sharp restrictions - both on the audience side but also recommendations throughout the country that in principle all amateur sports and sports for the older young people are on pause.

It's a tough period.

But I think there is a value in children's sports and elite sports being able to keep going.

"Fighting the spread must take precedence"

When will it be relevant to classify occupations according to which are more important than others?

Is the sports profession so important that it needs to continue when it is at its greatest spread?

- That is a discussion that the Public Health Agency should have.

Where is the infection spread?

As Minister of Sports, I think it is important that sports can keep going, not least for children and young people, but also the sports that consist of professionals who mean a lot to us here in Sweden.

With that said, we are in a position where combating the spread of infection must take precedence.

We will see how the Public Health Agency continuously assesses the situation going forward.

SVT Sport has also sought state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
