The duel between FC Midtjylland and Liverpool in the group stage of the Champions League will be played in Dortmund on December 9 due to quarantine rules, a spokesman for that city confirms to the German news agency

on Thursday

Due to the restrictions on travel between Denmark and the United Kingdom, the players of Liverpool would have to be quarantined for ten days upon return.

That is not an option for the reigning national champion in England.

The match in Signal Iduna Park, the home of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, has to be played without an audience by the local authorities, as is the case with all matches in the German league.

According to German broadcaster

, the idea to play Midtjylland-Liverpool in Dortmund came from Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

The German worked at Dortmund from 2008 to 2015 and had many successes with 'Die Borussen', including two national titles.

The last group duel with FC Midtjylland may be crucial for Liverpool to a place in the eighth finals of the Champions League.

Despite Wednesday's defeat against Atalanta (0-2), the team is first in group D, but competitors Ajax and Atalanta follow on two points.

There are still two rounds of play to go in the group stage.

Liverpool will first receive Ajax at Anfield next Tuesday and Atalanta will take on Midtjylland in Bergamo.

Liverpool has been qualified for the knockout phase with a win against Ajax.
