Chelsea continues its renaissance and leads the English Premier League temporarily

Chelsea became the seventh team to top the English Premier League this season after their 2-0 win at Newcastle United on Saturday thanks to Federico Fernandez's own goal and Tammy Abraham's shot in the second half.

Frank Lampard's side dominated in the first half and advanced ten minutes later when, under pressure from Ben Chilwell, Fernandes diverted Mason Mount's low cross pass in his net.

Chelsea should have consolidated their lead but Timo Werner missed several chances before Newcastle rose up in the second half.

Isaac Hayden missed a chance to equalize on the hour mark and minutes later Werner sprinted towards goal before clearing the ball to Abraham to double the visitors' lead.

Sean Longstaff almost cut the lead for Newcastle, but his shot hit the crossbar and the referee canceled a goal for Werner for offside.

Chelsea, with their third successive victory, raised their tally to 18 points, ahead of Leicester City, who are visiting champions Liverpool on Sunday.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur can take the lead from Chelsea later in the day.
