In the World Cup, all top skiers usually go in start groups one and two (out of a total of four) when it is an individual start.

This means that the competitions often feel decided even though half the starting field has barely started.

To get excitement into the last of this weekend's Swedish premiere in Idre, biathlon therefore borrows ideas from alpine and length and turns on the starting list, so the very best start last.

The plan applies to both Saturday's sprint and Sunday's short distance.

-Now the TV audience is guaranteed to get excitement until the last shot is fired, it feels great, says SVT's commentator Ola Bränholm.

The best started last

The best according to the IBU's international ranking go out at one minute intervals at the end of the field.

In the men's sprint, Sebastian Samuelsson will therefore start last with Czech World Cup medalist Michal Krcmar one minute ahead of him in the track.

In the ladies' race, Hanna Öberg is highest ranked, Marketa Davidova from the Czech Republic second highest.

Other skiers are drawn freely.

-It feels great to the TV audience that we can now do this in a strong international starting field.

It will be much more fun for everyone if the drama in the races remains as long as possible.

It also provides the opportunity for bangs when someone unseeded can be drawn to a really low starting number and perhaps can use the slightly harder tracks to surprise, says Bränholm.

"The drama in the races remains"

About 70 skiers are registered for all races this weekend, of which about half are foreign skiers.

In addition to the Czech Republic with many qualified skiers in the team, Estonia, Slovakia and Latvia are on site.

Stina Nilsson then?

Stina has no official ranking yet as this will be her competition debut as a biathlete.

Therefore, Nilsson, who belongs to the A national team, has been allocated a place just before the seeded riders leave.

All on site Corona-tested

Security concerns are high ahead of this weekend's premiere during the current pandemic.

No audience will be present and everyone who is to be in the stadium, regardless of whether they are skiers, leaders, officials and cameramen, must show a fresh negative Covid test before they receive their accreditation.
