The 1st level 3 autonomous car in Japan

The innovation of the day is a breakthrough in autonomous vehicles.

The first car in which you can read your newspaper while driving will finally be marketed.

It is neither a concept car, nor a limited series, but a mass production car.

High-end of course, but manufactured in volume ...

This is Honda Legend.

It will be sold by March, first in Japan.

And it will be the first level 3 autonomous car to market.

This means that it will no longer be necessary to be attentive and watch the road constantly.

The car will be able to make decisions on its own, overtake, change lanes, avoid work.

But only on expressways.

Isn't that what some Tesla, Mercedes or Audi cars are already doing?

Yes, sometimes, but on test cars or for demonstrations.

They have not yet been certified for level 3. So you absolutely have to keep your hands behind the wheel, to be able to regain control at any time.

It is above all a question of certification.

After eight months of testing, the Honda has just been tested by the Japanese authorities.

So, as you said, we'll be able to read our newspaper while driving in Japan.

And what does French law say?

That we can use this kind of car only for experiments.

Marketing is prohibited.

But in principle, the law should be updated.

This should become possible at the beginning of next year.

On the other hand, the autonomous mode will always be reserved for expressways.

To take a nap during his journey, we will have to wait for other authorizations and cars certified level 4 or 5. Those which will finally be able to drive independently everywhere or even do without a steering wheel.

But it won't be until 2022.
