• Accident. Terrifying crash in the sprint of the Tour of Poland: Jakobsen finishes against the fences and is "in an induced coma"

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has imposed a nine-month suspension on the Dutch cyclist Dylan Groenewegen for causing the serious accident of his compatriot Fabio Jakobsen in the Tour of Poland, which occurred last August.

"The UCI referred the case to Groenewegen, who acknowledged that he deviated from his line and committed a violation of the UCI Regulations. The cyclist collaborated with the investigation and agreed to meet a suspension period until May 7, 2021, corresponding to a period nine months from the date of the accident. The cyclist also agreed to participate in a series of events for the benefit of the cycling community, "the UCI explained in a statement.

In addition, the international federation wanted to highlight the "importance of acting in these incidents from a disciplinary point of view in a fair and consistent manner", as well as its intention to "continuously work on measures aimed at improving road safety".

The events date back to 5 August, when Jakobsen was the victim of a serious fall in the final sprint of the first stage of the Polish round, when he was displaced against the fence by Groenewegen at 80 kilometers per hour.

The Dutchman suffered serious injuries and was transferred to a hospital where he entered an induced coma and underwent surgery on his face, although brain and spinal injuries were ruled out.

Jakobsen recently announced that he will soon be training on the bike again, but his recovery process continues and he will have to undergo surgery again in 2021.
