The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has sanctioned
Andrea Iannone
, Aprilia's MotoGP rider,
with four years of disqualification
, suspended on March 31 after testing positive for a steroid in a control carried out during the 2019 Malaysian GP. Italian, who had appealed his previous 18-month sentence for doping, has thus tripled the length of his sentence.
The TAS panel of experts rejected the appeal filed by Iannone on March 31 and confirmed the appeal filed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
In this way, the suspension of the pilot is decreed as of December 17, 2019 and the cancellation of all his sports results from November 1, 2019, including the confiscation of any medals, points and prizes.
Iannone, with 13 World Championship victories, including one in MotoGP, tested positive for drostanolone propionate on November 3, 2019 in Sepang.
At that time he already defended that it was all a case of contaminated meat that he had ingested at that time in Malaysia, for which he considered that he should be acquitted.
Surpassed by Espargaró
However, the CAS considers that 'The Maniac' has not been able to specify the type of meat consumed or its origin.
In his opinion, the Aprilia rider's lawyers were also unable to specify what drostanolone contamination problem had occurred at that time in Malaysia.
The sanction is an almost definitive goodbye for the rider who in 2018 had become Aprilia's great hope.
However, his results never reached the targets and last year he couldn't even keep up with
Aleix Espargaró
, his garage partner.
The team has always supported its driver, replaced this course by
Bradley Smith
, and even wanted to put him back on the RS-GP 2020 in the next World Championship.
However, some media have already leaked Aprilia's deal with
Cal Crutchlow
.
