For a few minutes, Primoz Roglic watched the scenario repeat itself before his eyes.

Unable to respond to Richard Carapaz's attack, the Slovenian came close to losing the Vuelta on the penultimate stage, as had been the case on the Tour de France.

But the leader of the Jumbo-Visma has finally limited the damage in the climb of the Alto de Covatilla and keeps 24 seconds ahead of Carapaz overall, before the last stage (normally safe) towards Madrid.

While the red jersey was being played, David Gaudu took the opportunity to win his second stage victory after having taken the morning break and managed the last climb in a masterly way.

The young Frenchman also takes 8th place in the general classification.
