Jordanian taekwondo champion Ahmad Abu Ghosh was sentenced to 6 months in prison

On Thursday, the Jordanian Public Security Court sentenced Jordanian taekwondo star Ahmed Abu Ghosh to six months in prison on charges of forging official documents and possession of a passport illegally, according to what his lawyer confirmed to AFP.

Lawyer Ziyad al-Najdawi said that the court had ruled Abu Ghosh “for the offense of providing false statements with the intention of obtaining an ID card, sentencing him to two months imprisonment, possession of a passport illegally and sentencing him to six months imprisonment, violating orders and instructions related to his duty and military capacity, and sentencing him to two months imprisonment from The Military Penal Code, "in addition to" defaming the Public Security Directorate and sentencing him to two months imprisonment. "

Pursuant to the provisions of Article 72 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Jordan, the most severe penalty is applied, which is six months imprisonment.

On October 30, Abu Ghosh announced his international retirement at the age of 24, surprisingly.

Abu Ghosh published his retirement decision on his Facebook page, saying, "Olympic champion Ahmed Abu Ghosh, the first and only Olympic medalist in the history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, announces his retirement from participating and representing the national team in international forums."

Hours after his decision, the Jordanian General Security issued a statement saying that Abu Ghosh was "arrested in connection with a criminal case that has nothing to do with any sporting or Olympic matter."

The spokesman for the security apparatus confirmed that the Jordanian player "was arrested in a correction and rehabilitation center against the background of a criminal case pending before the judiciary, after which he was arrested."

Al-Najdawi said that the court's decision is "not final and will be challenged before the Court of Cassation," the highest judicial body in Jordan.

Abu Ghosh's retirement came as a surprise at his young age, as he was preparing for the qualifiers to participate in the Olympic Games scheduled in Tokyo, before they were postponed due to the outbreak of the new Corona virus in the world.

He participated in more than 20 international tournaments and training camps in preparation for representing Jordan in the next Olympic Games, after losing his chance to qualify directly as a result of the decline in his international classification, after suffering a knee cartilage injury in October 2019, and underwent surgery, according to the Federation's statement.

Abu Ghosh is the highest Jordanian athletic achievement by winning the gold medal in taekwondo for 68 kg at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Abu Ghosh engraved his name in gold letters when he overthrew Russian Alexei Denisenko in the final match 10-6, becoming the first Jordanian to record this achievement since The beginning of his country's participation in the Moscow Olympiad in 1980.
