“There is nothing serious or urgent (…) He is only a patient of a certain age, who is under a lot of pressure and who is going through a period during which he needs to be helped: it is it's hard to be Maradona you know, ”Dr Luque told reporters outside the clinic.

Some Argentinian media had earlier mentioned psychological problems to explain the hospitalization of the "Pibe de oro".

“Diego is fine, but he could be better.

I saw him in a state that I don't like to see him in, so I talked to him and I said to him "let's go to a clinic to make you feel a little better" and he said "ok, let's go ", said Dr Luque, according to whom the duration of the hospitalization of the Argentine star will depend on the results of the examinations.

Asked whether it might have been decided in connection with drug addiction problems, which Maradona suffered from in the past, the doctor replied "no, and it is not worth saying such. foolery ".

"The idea is that he is hospitalized for a few days, that he hydrates well but there is nothing surprising in that, nor nothing to hide," he added.

"It breaks my heart to see him like this"

Currently technical director of the local club (Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata), Maradona had insisted on Friday to lead the training of his players, on his 60th birthday, but did not seem in good shape and walked with difficulty.

“It breaks my heart to see him like that,” one of his two daughters, Gianninna Maradona, tweeted on Saturday.

He only stayed a few minutes on the pitch before retiring with the help of his assistants.

Some of his relatives recently presented symptoms comparable to those of Covid-19, but their tests came back negative.
