Up to 6 refugee teams dispatched to the Tokyo Paralympics October 28, 19:04

At the Tokyo Paralympic Games next year, the IPC = International Paralympic Committee has announced a policy of dispatching up to six "refugee teams" formed by refugees who have left their home countries due to conflicts.

The refugee team was formed for the first time at the last Rio de Janeiro Games in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and two refugee athletes from Syria and Iran participated in the Paralympics.

The IPC has also decided to form a refugee team at the Tokyo Paralympics, which was postponed for one year due to the effects of the new coronavirus, and to dispatch up to six athletes.

The selection of athletes will be selected from among refugee athletes who have met the standard records for participation in the Paralympics, and the IPC will strengthen its competitiveness and support participation in qualifying.

The refugee team will be headed by Irena Rodriguez, a former refugee from Cuba who represented the United States at the London Paralympics.

"We hope that the presence of the refugee team will raise awareness of the predicaments faced by refugees by people around the world," said Rodriguez.

The refugee team is expected to be formed at the Tokyo Olympics, and the IOC = International Olympic Committee has already announced candidate athletes.
